OpenDNS: Better, Faster, Safer?

Most people don’t think twice about how they navigate around the web. You just type a familiar URL yahoo.com or click a link and you go there. However, before you can actually reach a web page, picture, video, sound file or any other resource on the internet, a DNS server must translate those letters and numbers into an IP address.Typically surfers rely on their ISP’s DNS servers to do the heavy lifting. However, as ISPs grow and web pages become more complex with graphically intensive content that is located on servers spread further across the net, the time it takes to find all the IP addresses required to build a page is increasing the load on the servers and hence the time it takes to get where you are going. Enter OpenDNS…

Use OpenDNS

OpenDNS is a free service that allows you to replace your ISP’s slower, overburdened DNS servers. Because you can use OpenDNS without installing anything by simply changing a setting on your PC, router or other networked device, I frequently suggest my clients switch as a first step in trouble shooting slow and unresolved pages. In most cases, the end result is immediately noticeable. Pages that timed out now resolve and load faster. In addition to the speed benefit, if you choose to register, you can take advantage of many more useful features including Phishing Protection, Domain Blocking, Adult Site Blocking and more.

To learn about OpenDNS and how simple it is to speed up your surfing experience, give it a try.
